Alan George Bennett
April 29th, 1928 - July 31st, 2020
Obituary Alan was born in 1928 in a house on High Street in Leyton, London, England the oldest of three siblings. He had two younger sisters - Paul and Olly (Pauline and Olive). His father was an officer of Hillman's Transport - later Hillman's Airways - later British Air and his mother was an accomplished piano player. In 1939, when he was a young lad, Hitler invaded Poland and set off WWII. The events of the next few years would shape his outlook on life and be the source of many stories. Since his father owned airplanes, they decided to leave London and head to the West Country to avoid German air raids. After a year in the West Country they decided no attack was coming, so they moved back to London - just in time for the Blitzkrieg. He studied Physics and Electrical Engineering and was a Chartered Engineer in the UK. In his early career he worked on x-ray machines for Philips, moving on to electron microscopes, then moving on to sales of various machines and medical devices. He lived in the UK, Argentina, Japan, and the US (plus an unexpected 6 weeks in northern Spain in the early 1950s when his ancient model A Ford broke down in a little fishing village called Llanca and it took that long to fix the car). In the US he lived in New Jersey for a few years, Langhorne, Pennsylvania for almost 40 years, and Fort Collins for the remainder of his life. He was married to Betty in the early 50s, then to Rachel, then to Fern for 47 years until her death in 2015. He was always willing to regale you with a good story, especially over a glass of wine. During his life liked horses, big dogs, sailing, the ocean, travel, wine, and tennis. He enjoyed his time at the Rotary and working with the Fort Collins Symphony. Alan is survived by his sister Olly, sons Mike, Mark and Adam and a daughter Janel and numerous grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Fern, his sister Pauline, and his parents. Due to COVID, there will not be a service immediately scheduled.
