Obituary Margarite Cleopatra (Zickos) Winne was born on April 21, 1924 at home in Fulton, Missouri to Tsatsi John' & Elvira (Carabena) Zickos. She had one brother, Theodore Roosevelt Zickos, 4 years her elder and her idol growing up. As a child, Margarite would join hands with her lifelong friend, Martha Clapp, skip and sing You Are My Sunshine'. which said much about the way she lived the rest of her life. She attended William Woods College in Fulton, then finished her degree in Special Ed Teaching at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois. Her first job brought her to the Colorado School for the Deaf and in Colorado Springs in 1946. It was here that she met Grant Harold Winne on a blind date. They were married on December 23, 1947 and continued to live in Colorado Springs. Margarite quit work to raise her family, but was a pillar in the community for volunteer work. Pikes Peak La Sertoma, P.E.O.'s Chapter Y, Operation School Bell (clothing needy children) & the First Methodist Church were but a few of the organizations she lovingly gave her time to. She was very involved with the start and ongoing care of P.E.O.'s Chapter House (elderly housing for P.E.O. sisters) located near the Broadmoor. Growing up in the heart of the Great Depression, travel was not afforded, so Margarite made it an important part of her family's life. Cross country road trips were a summer family favorite to many historical sites - Grant would drive and Margarite would educate and entertain. Weekend camping and fishing trips in the southern Colorado mountains were also frequent - Grant would drive and educate, Margarite would entertain! After Grant's retirement, they traveled the world with Ports of Call. In 2003 she and Grant moved to Fort Collins to be near their children and grandchildren. Grant passed away in 2004, after 57 loving years. Margarite continued on, joining P.E.O.'s Chapter GS where she was an active member until her passing (a golden+ girl with 63 years as a P.E.O.!).She loved bridge and played up until a week before leaving us. She also enjoyed playing board and card games with her children and grandchildren, and took humble pride in continually beating the pants off all of us! Other hobbies, such as knitting (which she learned at the age of 10), cross-stitching, puzzles, water aerobics and golf were all a large part of her life. We will always cherish her many incredible afghans, sweaters and pictures left to us. Margarite was an amazing wife, mother & grandmother. She was a gracious hostess always entertaining and comforting everyone! She deeply touched every person she met, a true light of this world. She will be sadly missed, but has returned to her true home. Margarite is lovingly survived by her sons Grant Ronald Winne (Johnelle), Matthew Brent Winne, her daughter Kim Leslie Normandin (Pat), 2 granddaughters Logan and Audra Winne , 2 grandsons Sean and Casey Normandin and 4 step grandchildren Shelli Hisey, Michael Nelson, Avi Mostyn, Shoshi Ringel & former daughters-in-law Becky Winne and Linda Bram. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Chapter GS, P.E.O.* (a philanthropic educational organization which provides scholarships to women) or Pathways Hospice would be gratefully appreciated. *P.E.O. donations can be made out to P.E.O.- Chapter GS and mailed to Kim (Winne) Normandin, 300 Jackson Ave., Fort Collins, CO 80521. An open house to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, November 13th at The Lodge at Mackenzie Place, 4751 Pleasant Oak Drive, Fort Collins, from 4 to 7 pm.
