John A. Sprackling
March 3rd, 1934 - January 20th, 2018
Obituary John A. Sprackling, 83, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2018 in Fort Collins. He was born to George and Mildred Sprackling on March 3, 1934. He grew up in Janesville, WI, graduating from Janesville High School in 1952. He attended Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota, graduating in 1956 with a B.A. in Economics. John spent two years in the U.S. Army from 1956-58 which included a 16-month tour of duty in Korea. He married LeEtta Sanger on June 14, 1958. They had three sons and later divorced in 1985. After working in the business world for seven years (A.C. Nielsen Market Research and Colorado National Bank), he changed careers by moving from Denver to Fort Collins and obtained a Master's degree in Forestry from CSU in 1968. This launched a 28-year career with the U.S. Forest Service where he worked in Salem, Oregon; Lincoln, Nebraska; and in Fort Collins. John earned a PhD in Forestry from CSU in 1973. He married Dorothy Matthauser, who also worked in Forestry in 1986. John retired in Fort Collins from the the Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station in 1994. He loved working for the U.S. Forest Service and he enjoyed many outdoor activities: hunting, skiing, canoeing, hiking, gardening, and especially fishing. During his life he was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church, Society of American Foresters, American Forestry Association, Long Pond Association, American Legion, The Goodtimes Dance Club, and Crystal Lakes Association where he was on the Fishing Board and wrote articles for the Wapiti Bugle, the Crystal Lakes newsletter. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a sister. He is survived by his wife Dorothy; three sons, Charles (Shelley) Sprackling of Windsor, CO; Jack (Holly) Sprackling of Golden, CO and Steve(Shana) Sprackling of Lincoln, NE; seven grandchildren, Ryan (Angela) and Marcelle Sprackling of Golden, CO, Eric and Jay Sprackling of Windsor, CO, and Carlee, Haley, and Mattie Mae of Lincoln, NE; and one great grandson, Scott Sprackling of Golden, CO. A memorial service to remember John will be on his birthday, Saturday, March 3rd at Timberline Church (South Auditorium) at 10a.m. Timberline Church is at 2908 S. Timberline Rd., Fort Collins, CO 80525. Memorials may be made in his name to the Crystal Lakes Community Fund or to the American Legion.
