Edward Frank Eden was born to William Charles and Evelyn Eden on April 16, 1935 in Grass Valley, California. He died on February 5, 2017 in Yuba City and is at home with the Lord after an extended battle with Alzheimer's disease. Ed grew up in Yuba City and graduated from Yuba City High School in 1953. He loved learning and attended Yuba College, received a Bachelor's Degree from San Jose State University and a Master's Degree from University of Southern California. Ed's passion for serving people and love of the laws of our country led him to a career as a probation officer. He served in Ventura County and Sutter County where he became Chief Probation Officer, retiring in 1990 after a distinguished career. Ed met his first wife, Sheila, in Davis California and after their marriage in 1961, they raised their family in Yuba City. The Edens were very active in St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and helped with planning and fundraising as the church facility and services expanded. Community service and mission work were important to Ed. He started the local American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and his love for community service soon led him to United Way where he served as President and on many committees. He was active in youth group leadership; such as, Boy Scouts of America, Yuba Sutter YMCA, and Mexico Mission trips. Ed's love of learning continued throughout his life. He was a leader in Friends of the (Sutter County) Library and organized any book sales to benefit library activities. After retirement he spent time collecting donated books, pricing and sorting volumes, setting up displays and selling. It was truly a labor of love. Ed was fascinated by the study of earth science and loved to collect gems and minerals. He served as President of the Sutter Buttes Gem and Mineral Society and enjoyed frequent rock hounding expeditions with his friends. Ed and Sheila loved to travel, visiting most of the US and much of Europe. They attended Olympic events whenever possible. In 1996 Ed was honored to carry the Olympic torch. Ed and Sheila organized St. Andrew Travelers, leading groups to tourist destinations in the western U.S. Ed started the Easy Rider program shuttling local residents to and from regional airports. All proceeds were used to fund projects at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Sheila died in October 2007. In June 2009, Ed married Cherry Johnson, and they continued Ed's passion for world travel until his health no longer permitted. They traveled extensively in Europe where they explored 12 countries. They also loved to spend time with friends and family. Fundraising was another passion and they helped organize golf tournaments and other events to benefit St. Andrew Church. Ed is survived by his loving wife, Cherry Johnson Eden, son Andrew Eden (Sandy) of Santa Rosa, daughter Karen Hennessy of Las Vegas, grandsons Cody and Logan Hennessy, step-children Tiffany Thomason of Newbury Park ,Kyle Johnson of Penn Valley, four step-grandchildren and three great step grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Yuba City, on Sunday, February 26 at 2:00 pm. Ullrey Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Sutter North Hospice Alzheimer's Association
