Mrs. Wilma Mae Johnson
December 5th, 1925 - August 17th, 2018
Mrs. Wilma Mae (Davenport) Johnson, born December 5, 1925, passed away at the age of 92, on August 17, 2018, in her home in Yuba City, California. Wilma was born in Grundy County, Missouri to the late Viola and John Davenport. Wilma was the beloved wife of the late Arthur Melvin (Mel) Johnson for more than 70 years and the loving mother of four children. Wilma and Mel moved to Yuba City in 1945, and resided for the duration of their years, aside from more than thirty winters, which they spent in living out their retirement in one of their three self-built motorhomes in Mexico. During those winters, Wilma would prepare and package all of the fish that Mel brought in from the Sea of Cortez to nourish her family back home. No one will ever forget Grandma's tuna sandwiches. She could also be found visiting with friends or riding on the back of their ATV through the Mexico desert. In addition to being a homemaker, Wilma was co-owner of Mel's Auto Parts of Yuba City for 18 years. She and her husband also owned and managed several different properties in Yuba City through the years. She enjoyed playing cards with friends and family, as well as attending and socializing as a longtime member of Cooper Avenue Baptist Church. Wilma will be remembered as the backbone of a large family; a hardworking, supportive and loving woman of faith, whose unconditional love made everyone feel welcome. Normally sweet and always politely-spoken, she had a sarcastic streak that would often surprise them and make them smile. She also had a generous spirit, always taking care of her own and then some. Wilma is preceded in death by her husband; her mother and father; her siblings: John Davenport, Bill Davenport, Lois Mangrum and Mary Hoffman; and her grandson, Kevin Johnson. She is survived by her four children: Judy Hafferty (Dennis), Janet Johnson, Jim Johnson (Sallie) and Joyce Hammitt; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Wilma was a great woman and will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her. Friends and family members may attend the graveside service, officiated by Pastor David Turner, on Friday, August 24, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at Sutter Cemetery, 7200 Butte Avenue, Sutter, California under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Chapel. A Celebration of Life is to follow at Cooper Avenue Baptist Church, 804 Cooper Avenue, Yuba City. In lieu of flowers the family invites donations in Wilma's name to Sutter North Hospice or a charity of your choice.
