Peter Martinez, 81, resident of Gonzales, passed away on Monday,December 31,2012 at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 26, 1931 in Reedley, CA. He is survived by his wife of 38 years Emma Martinez; daughters Laura Martinez and Merry Martinez; his brothers David Martinez and Sam Martinez; various grandchildren and great grandchildren. Peter is a life-long resident of Gonzales where he is well known in his community and remembered for his boxing career. He was the Monterey County Feather weight champion and became pro by the time he was 18 yrs old. Peter was a contender for state featherweight champion but due to a car accident his boxing career was ended.He retired from Speckles Sugar Co. after 24 years and volunteered with the Montery County Food Bank for several years. He enjoyed watching the SF Giants play, reading the newspaper, and spending time with his family. On January 7, 2013 a Rosary recital will take place at 11am followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30am, all at St. Theodore's Church 125 Center St. in Gonzales, CA 93926. An inurnment will follow at a later date at the Gonzales District Cemetery Hwy 101 S. Gonzales, CA 93926.
