Nola Rae Hovland
January 3rd, 1937 - February 2nd, 2018
Nola Rae (Hulbert) Hovland, 81 died at home surrounded by loving family on February 2, 2018, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Nola Rae is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Curtis Hovland, and by their three children, Karla (Philip) Schot of Forest Grove, Craig Hovland of Federal Way, Washington, and Kevin (Sharon Block) Hovland of Washington, DC. She was beloved grandmother to Dana Schot, Paul Schot, Eli Hovland and Charlotte Hovland. she is survived by her twin sister Kae Eby, and her sister Bonnie Jean Hansen, both of Canby. She was preceded in death by her brother, Gregory Hulbert. Nola Rae was born on January 3, 1937 in Medford, Oregon, to Ralph and Mildred (Ott) Hulbert. The family moved to Canby in 1947 where they opened Hulberts Flowers. A graduate of Canby High School (1955), Nola Rae was a member of the Honor Society, a musician, actress, and cheerleader. She attended nursing school at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland and graduated with an RN degree from Abbott Hospital in Minneapolis in 1958. She married Curtis Hovland, also of Canby, in 1957 and raised a loving family in Des Moines, Washington. She was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Seattle, Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Messiah Lutheran Church in Vancouver, and Zoar Lutheran Church in Canby. She volunteered in Des Moines public schools and was involved in women's leadership organizations within the church (ALCW) and community. She enjoyed traveling with dear friends, civil war history, crossword puzzles, and the Oregon Coast. She retired in 1990 after a caring career in geriatric nursing and returned to Canby in 2009. In Canby, she especially enjoyed volunteering for Meals on Wheels. A memorial service to celebrate Nola Rae's life will be held at 11:00 am, February 24, 2018 at Zoar Lutheran Church in Canby. Pastor Michelle Manicke will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Care Partners Hospice in Hillsboro.
