John Anthony Mull passed away January 18, 2019 at home with his family by his side after a courageous battle against cancer. John was born November 3, 1943 in England where his father Charles was stationed during World War II. His mother was a British war bride. The family came to the United States when John was 2 years old and his real history began in So California. John became a US citizen at the age of 10. He graduated from Downey High School in 1962 and attended Jr. College before joining the US Army. John was stationed at Fort Irwin in the Mojave Desert, training in the armored tank division. After his release from military service, John enrolled in Barber College in Los Angeles and graduated in 1967. It was during this time John met the love of his life, Jenny. After their first date they never looked back. They married on Valentine's Day 1969. They welcomed son Josh in 1972 and their family was complete. John and Jenny would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this Valentine's Day 2019. John worked cutting hair in a few shops before opening his own "Olde Clippings Hair Design" in Long Beach in 1970. A few years later in 1972 John opened Josh's General Store, an antique shop, next door to his Olde Clippings Salon. Jenny was receptionist for the salon and ran the antique shop, which their clients enjoyed exploring for treasures while they waited for their hair cut. Even though the businesses were thriving, the family decided in 1979 to relocate to a quieter, better quality of life in Chico, California. John liked to be busy, so he began restoring a condemned building on Park Avenue, and opened Olde Clippings Hair Design in 1980. The building was recognized with the 1st Golden Rose Award presented by the city for it's design. John loved cutting hair and took great pride in his work but his real fulfillment came in the connections and friendships he established with this clients and friends. Many of these first acquaintances continued to be close personal friends for years. One of those connections led to a partnership with James Snidle in a business called ABC Estate Liquidations. They opened Orange Street Consignments in the mid 90s with John becoming the sole owner when James moved to San Francisco. John called himself "a hunter and gatherer" because he loved finding and collecting treasures from the past. John's greatest love in life was his family which grew when Josh married Rebecca who was like a daughter. He and Jenny loved spending time visiting the coast and socializing with friends, but their greatest joy was making memories with their grandchildren. They relished their roles as Gam and Papa. John loved hunting, fishing and a close comradery with his son Josh. They spent many chilly mornings in a duck blind or hunting fields for pheasants, doves or fishing on the Sacramento River. John was a large presence who was always smiling and laughing and telling stories…...lots of stories. He saw the best in everyone and loved helping. He was chairman of Ducks Unlimited Durham Chapter for 8 years. John is remembered with love by his devoted wife Jenny, son Josh, daughter-in-law Rebecca, and his grandchildren Jacy and Bryce Mull who he loved with all his heart. He is also survived by his mother Theresa Stevens of Huntington Beach and many relatives and friends that were close to his heart. John was predeceased by his father Charles Mull and step-father Judson Stevens. A Celebration of John life will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019, 1:00PM at Patrick Ranch, 10381 Midway, Durham
