Jay Roger Hanson

Jay was born in Coronado, California, the youngest of three children to Capt. Kenneth Earl Hanson (US Navy) and Olive Rebecca “Stevie” Steeves. He passed away at his home in San Diego, California. Jay graduated from Point Loma High School in 1966 and then earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from UC Berkeley in 1971. Jay was known for his sense of humor, charm, kindness, and resourcefulness. He was at home wherever he went and enjoyed skiing, hiking, backpacking, and kart racing as well as being in and on the water, sailing, surfing, and scuba diving. Traveling in the USA, as well as abroad, and photographing architecture, nature, and refurbishing classic cars were a big part of his life. After college, Jay served as a lifeguard for the City of San Diego. He was a member of the San Diego Mustang Club, an avid reader, and Oakland Raiders fan. Buying “fixer uppers” houses and remodeling them was a welcome endeavor that supported his lifestyle of the “50/50” Club (work 50% of the time and play/travel the other 50%). Jay enjoyed being a contractor, doing both new construction and remodels in Hawaii, Reno, southern and northern California. He was quick to lend a hand, volunteer, and share insights when asked. He brought hope to many, shared stories with ease, and always had a joke to tell. Jay is survived by his sister, Jody Snyder of Medford, Oregon, son Kenny Hanson of former wife Donna “Davina” Dufault, several cousins, nephews, nieces, and dog “Spike” and is deeply missed. A Celebration of Life Service and Reception will be held at Seaside Center of Spiritual Living in Encinitas at 1613 Lake Drive in Encinitas, California 92024 on Saturday, March 3rd from 2-6pm.
