Barbara Joan Wood

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara, our loving and devoted mom and friend to all. Barbara Joan Wood was born on April 10, 1938 in Missoula, Montana.  She went home to spend eternity with the Lord on February 11, 2022, in Chico, California.  She was surrounded by her family as she left this world in peace and love.   Barbara was a gentle, kind, and generous lady.  She will be incredibly missed by all who knew her. Barbara was born to Lloyd and Grace Bernhard.  She was the second of 6 children.  As the oldest daughter, she was huge help to her parents, and her siblings lovingly regarded her as a second mother.  As a young girl the family moved around quite a bit, as her father was a forester.  They lived in Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and finally California.   Barbara attended high school in the small town of John Day, Oregon.  A couple of months before her senior graduation she moved with her family to San Francisco, California.  Talk about culture shock! Barbara graduated from high school in San Francisco, then moved to Chico, California, to attend California State University, Chico.  It was there that she was married and had three children, Christy, Susan, and Brian.  Soon after they moved to Oroville, California. Barbara single handedly raised her three children (and if you know her children, you'd know that was no minor feat!). Her life revolved around her children.  She kept busy attending all of their events and activities.  When she was blessed with grandchildren she continued her tradition of attending all of their activities.  Barbara loved being at home with family and friends.  She spent hours in the kitchen and had a continual stream of people raiding her refrigerator. Barbara spent decades hosting the family's annual Thanksgiving dinner, which would include anywhere from 30 - 80 family members.  She prepared dinner for her entire family every single Sunday night. It is a memory that we will cherish forever.  She created epic and unforgettable Christmas and Easter celebrations and spoiled her grandchildren like no other.  She loved gardening and spent many hours in the sun caring for her beautiful backyard.  One of Barbara's all-time favorite activities was bowling.  She had been on bowling teams for over 50 years.   Barbara was an incredibly strong and determined lady who was self-sufficient.  She would conquer any challenge, from sewing a wedding dress, to pouring concrete for a patio.  She showed her children that they could do anything they put their minds to.              Barbara loved the Lord. She lived her life helping others.  She attended Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Oroville.  She was always there to help any one in need, whether it be preparing food or making blankets.   Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Grace Bernhard.  Barbara is survived by her daughter Christy Bradford (Tim), daughter Susan McDonnell, son Brian Wood, grandchildren Jessica Kelly (Bryan), T.C. Bradford (Amanda), Lindsay Wood, Travis Wood, Tanner McDonnell, and great grandchildren Brooklyn, Kenzly, Madison, and Sienna. In celebration of Barbara's life: Recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 5:30 P.M. on Monday, February 21 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Oroville. The Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 22, at 11:00 A.M. with a reception immediately following, also at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Oroville.
