John Raymond Ohl
May 31st, 1944 - November 25th, 2015
John Raymond Ohl, Jr., died suddenly on November 25, 2015. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Fruin-Ohl with whom he shared many happy years. Born and raised in Findlay, Ohio, he was the son of the late John R. and Rosella (Stanfield) Ohl. He graduated from Findlay Senior High School in 1962 and attended Ohio State University. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1964 and served for 26 years before retiring in 1990, achieving the rank of Machinist’s Mate Master Chief Petty Officer. John loved to travel and was able to see many parts of Europe, Asia, Australia and North America during his time in the Navy. John lived on both coasts and in Hawaii before he relocated to the San Diego area in 1982 and made it his permanent home. Upon his retirement from the U.S. Navy, he worked for several years at BAE Systems as a QAT Inspector and PCP Coordinator. John was a 23 year member of the B.P.O. Elks. He was a member of the Santee-Lakeside Elks Lodge 2698 and served as Exalted Ruler of the San Diego Elks Lodge 168 in 1998-1999 and again in 2003-2004. John was named Elk of the Year in 2005 and was very active on many committees and Elks charitable and community efforts. John loved spending time with his family and friends. He loved to cook and entertain and was known for events he coordinated for the Elks. He enjoyed racing sand dune cars in his earlier years and later took up golfing with his wife and friends. He is survived by his daughter, Cheryle Leonard, and her husband Frank of Peabody, Massachusetts and his grandsons Jack and Michael. John also leaves his sister Dorothy Lewis and her husband Donald of Ames, Iowa, his sister Jana Hassan, and brother David Ohl of Findlay, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by many other family and friends, including Gena Kirk, Nicole Myers, and Kimberly McGrath, daughters of his dear long-time friend Donna Calvetti who predeceased him. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2015, 3:00PM, at the San Diego Elks Lodge 168, 7430 Jackson Drive, San Diego, CA 92119, (619) 337-0168.
