Lifetime resident of Amador County, Nancy Flagg of Jackson, CA, passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2022, after a brief illness. Born in Fiddletown, CA on December 24, 1936, the daughter of Albert and Marjorie Schoonover. Nancy grew up in Fiddletown, attending Oleta School, which was the one room schoolhouse for children Kindergarten through 8th grade. She attended Sutter Creek Union High School where she met and married her first husband, Lou Laverone. While Lou was in the Navy, Nancy lived in Hawaii for a time with other Navy wives and made herself useful by volunteering on the island of Molokai, making bandages for the Leper Colony Hospital. When Lou was discharged from the Navy, they moved back home to Amador County to start their family. They raised 3 daughters in Sutter Creek, Kim, Debbie and Tammy. Nancy had many careers, working for the "Telephone Company" as she referred to it, as an operator in Jackson. She worked for many years for the County of Amador in several capacities: a Clerk in the Justice Court, as the Veterans Service Officer, and a Clerk in the Sheriff's Office. She also worked for Gretzinger and Weatherby Civil Engineers, Weatherby Associates and Winterbrook Winery. No matter what she did - she was accomplished and excelled in everything she set her mind to. She met her second husband, Byron Flagg, and they were married in June of 1974. Together they left their employment with the County of Amador, and went on to manage a family-owned resort in Panamint Springs, CA. Upon their return from there, she went to work for Manassero Insurance Agency, Joe Matich Insurance Agency, and Matich-Vukovich Insurance Agency, where she finally retired. Nancy was an accomplished seamstress, and she made most of the clothes for her children when they were young. Her daughters called her Martha Stewart! She loved to dress them in matching outfits. They recall a time when she was making them all down jackets - feathers everywhere! She also loved to crochet, especially blankets for all the new babies in her life. She made blankets for all of her new grandchildren, and other new arrivals of friends. She was an excellent cook and baker. Her pies were always the best, especially the crust! Her daughters were always calling to say, "Mom, how do I make this?", and today still cook "Mom's dishes." One of our favorites is the family raviolis we made each year for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Not only a time of sharing and cooking, but family gathering. When her children were young, she entered them almost every year in the Kit Carson Kiddies Parades and the Italian Picnic Parade. Summers in Lake Tahoe were always a favorite family vacation at the family cabin. She loved to travel when she could, trips with her sisters, Mom and her daughters were fond memories for her. She and Byron traveled as often as they could, spending many vacations at the coast or riding the trains, one of their favorites. She was also a member of the 1830 Club and made many lifelong friends there. And she was an avid 49er fan! Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Albert, and Marjorie Schoonover of Fiddletown, both of her husbands, Lou Laverone and Byron Flagg, and her sister, Cindy Schoonover- Jarzemkoski. She is survived by her sister Helen Ninnis of Ione, her children Kim (Ciro) Toma of Sutter Creek, Debbie (Scott) Murray of Oregon, Tammy Smalldon of Jackson, Michael (Tina) Flagg of Jackson, Gina (Todd) Waklee of Pine Grove and Matt (Stacy) Toma of Jackson. Grandchildren Will Kelly, Jackie (John) Malhotra, David (Paully) Murray, Kimberly Smalldon, Amanda Flagg, Rachel Flagg, Zack Waklee, Logan (Kayley) Waklee, Christian (Hannah) Toma and Gianna Toma, as well as 13 great-grandchildren and nephews and niece, Lance (Rachel) Ninnis, Gerelyn (Mike Burchard) Ninnis, Caleb Jarzemkoski and Jacob Jarzemkoski. Friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at 11:00 am at Sunset View Cemetery, Jackson, CA. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Susan G Komen for the Cure, 2443 Fair Oaks Blvd #223, Sacramento, CA 95825.
