Gary Russell Wright
March 10th, 1943 - August 13th, 2023
Gary Russell Wright, a soft-spoken, reserved, and hardworking man. He was a son, a brother, a father, a husband and good friend. There were many layers to Gary Wright. He was born, raised and educated in San Diego, California. Born to Marion Wright and Virginia Brashear (both preceded him in death). Gary had one baby sister, Carrie Wright (deceased/2021), and four brothers (Timmy Wright, Jimmy Wright, Pokey Wright/deceased; and Paul Wright/status unknown). Life was initially rough for Gary in his formative years; but he was determined and diligent in turning his life around to become a gainfully employed, law-abiding and positive influence to his community. He was always generous to the homeless when they asked him for assistance. He had a lengthy career as a Custodian with the San Diego Community College District where he retired after approximately 30 plus years of service. Gary had many talents and passions. He was an excellent tennis player. He played competitively in tennis tournaments around San Diego County and nearby cities. Gary was also an excellent swimmer and surfer; he taught many kids in the family and community how to swim. His greatest passion was art and painted many portraits and murals for family, friends, and businesses around town. Gary was attempting to get back to his art near the end of his life. Gary became a first-time father at the seasoned age of 50 to his only child, John Russell Champion, in 1993 whom he co-parented with Debrah Champion. Gary and Debrah were married much later after John was born - August 8, 2012. He was the best father he knew how to be; Gary loved being a father and role model to his son. They had a very close relationship, which is so important to our young Black men in today’s society. John loved and always looked up to and cared for his father to his final days here on earth. Gary Wright left this earthly realm unexpectedly Sunday evening - August 13, 2023, and leaves to celebrate his memory, his beloved son John, his wife Debrah, other family members, many close friends near and far to keep positive and lasting memories. Gary Wright will be cremated, per his wishes, a memorial service to be determined at a later date. The family thanks everyone for your many expressions of love, support, and condolences.
