Pauline “Polly” Alice Chapman, 91, of Ione, California, peacefully passed away on September 25, 2018. Polly was born on October 27, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. She was the child of Luther Paul Shetler and Mary Alice Shetler. Polly grew up in Colorado and Wyoming in her younger years. At the age of 14, the family moved to San Francisco where she attended Mission High School. After high school, Polly went right to work at the Naval Supply Depot as a civilian employee. She supported the war effort by working on a project to develop nerve gas resistant clothing for our troops. This project inspired her to start taking classes at the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University. While working and attending school, she met her husband Ken, a soldier stationed at The Presidio in San Francisco. They were married in 1946. They had three children, and as soon as she was able, Polly returned to the work force and continued her education. Eventually, she earned her BS degree in industrial psychology and a minor in business from California State University Hayward while working as a quality control supervisor for both Granny Goose Foods and Nestle. In retirement, she traveled throughout Europe, Canada, Mexico, and across the United States. Additionally, she earned her credential as a Master Gardener, wrote gardening articles for The Ledger Dispatch, and volunteered for Lockwood Fire Department. She is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Kenneth Chapman; her parents, Luther Paul Shetler and Mary Alice Shetler; her brother, James Shetler and his wife, Barbara. Polly will be deeply missed by her son, Kenneth Chapman and his wife, Anna of the Netherlands; daughter, Nancy Joyner and her husband, Gary of Ione; son, Thomas Chapman and his wife Cindy of Ceres; as well as her grandchildren, Lisa Trassare and her husband Joe of Ione, Michael Chapman of the Netherlands, Lynette Headings and her husband Craig of Nampa, Idaho, Jennifer Chapman of Ceres, Christopher Chapman and his wife Jessica of Linda, John Joyner of Colorado Springs, and David Chapman of Ceres. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Zach Stevens, Justin Trassare, Morgan Trassare, Krysta Chapman, Lillyana Chapman, Cralyn Headings, and Colten Headings. Services will be held at Daneri Mortuary in Jackson, California on Friday, October 5th at 11:00 A.M. Donations in her memory can be made to Amador Community College Foundation, 525-6 S. Highway 49, Jackson, CA 95642, to A-Pal Humane Society, 1245 Jackson Gate Rd., Jackson, CA 95642, or to Alzheimer’s Society of Northern California, P.O. Box 1824, Sacramento, CA 95812.
