George Warren Hinds

George Warren Hinds Sept 22, 1925 – Nov 7, 2020 George Warren Hinds passed away at his home in San Luis Obispo on Saturday Nov 7 surrounded by family, at the advanced age of 95. He is predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Clemence Turcotte Hinds, and is survived by his 5 children and their spouses Connie and husband Lee Burns, David, Michelle, Michael and wife Laura Hinds and Warren and husband Michael Rallo, along with his 5 grandchildren Amy Burns, Emily Burns, Samantha Hinds, Zena Rae Hinds and Kathrine Welenc. Born in Phillips, Maine, he was the son of Roland Samuel and Amanda Bourque Hinds. George graduated from Portland High School on a Friday and reported to Ft. Devans on Monday for his service in the Army Air Corp during WWII. George and Clemence married in Stratton, Maine in 1947 and moved to Massachusetts, settling just north of Boston to raise their family. George earned a degree in accounting from Becker College. He began his career with RCA, ultimately becoming the Comptroller for EG&G. In 1980, at the age of 55, George was fortunate to begin his 40 years of retirement, starting with a cross-country RV tour landing in San Luis Obispo, CA. George and Clemence loved traveling; bicycling across France, hot-air balloon rides over the Serengeti, hiking the Grand Canyon, and yearly trips with the family to Cape Cod. They were members of the “Cuesta Crankers Model A Club”, often found sporting period clothing while driving the Model-A. George spent two days a week, every week, for over 30 years, delivering senior nutrition lunches throughout SLO, (often in the Model-A), earning the title of the Senior Citizen of the Year in 2011 by the County of SLO for his service. George was a proud member of the Baywood Navy, restoring “San Francisco Pelican” sailboats, and navigating the treacherous waters of the Back Bay in Los Osos or adventures to California Baha. George was a real inspiration to his friends and family, in the value of keeping active and fit in old age. He climbed MT Whitney when he when 77. and enjoyed cycling into his 90’s, from his home, over Turri Rd to Los Osos to meet with friends for coffee. When he could no longer cycle, he could routinely be seen walking the bluff along Montano do Oro, Dairy Creek or Meadowside up until a week before he passed. An avid reader, you could always count on George for a lively conversation about history or politics, or a story about what it was like growing up in central Maine in the 1930’s. He was loved by many and will be missed. The family extends their heartfelt thanks and appreciation.
