John Castoe

John passed away suddenly at his home in Pine Grove, CA on January 28, 2018. John was born in French Camp, CA on February 28, 1947, a son of Ida Louise Castoe and the late Wilbur Myron Castoe, and brother to Margaret, Becky and the late Katherine. John made his home in Amador County for 40 years and was the well-known owner of Bigfoot Market in Pine Grove, CA for 10 years. John was in the grocery business for 37 years (since he was 13 years old), and was a Correctional Officer for 13 years until he retired. John is survived by his four children, Shellee Quintal, Jeff Castoe, Dave Castoe and Levi Castoe; 9 grandchildren, Clayton, Kilie, Paige, Ashlyn, Tessa, Chet, Shelby, Janey and Seth; and 3 great grandchildren, Jace, Tatum, and William; and was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Donna Castoe (Young). John was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father and was known to most of his family as Papa, as he adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved being a Papa. John loved the outdoors whether it was fishing in his boat, hunting, shooting or relaxing in his trailer at Sliver Lake. He loved Hot Rods and could be seen cruising around in his midnight blue Dodge Challenger with the license plate “OLDMAAN”. John was caring and very generous, making sure no one went without, whether it be in his grocery days or within his family and friends. John made us all laugh and he couldn’t go anywhere without running into someone he knew and having a little chat. John loved his family, friends, and community with his whole heart and will be greatly missed. Memorial Services will be held at Sutter Creek Church of the Nazarene, 14050 Ridge Rd., Sutter Creek, CA at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, February 8, 2018. A Celebration of Life will be held at the American Legion Hall, 12134 Airport Road, Sutter Creek, CA at approximately 11:00 A.M. immediately following the memorial.
