John Alessio Ferrero (10/18/1917-7/5/15). John was a long time resident of Amador County on the Ferrero Ranch, where he was born in Shenandoah Valley. He was preceded in passing by his parents Peter J. Ferrero and Clorinda Ferrero (Dal Porto), sister Edith Silva, aunt Eva Vaira, Uncles Rev. Guiseseppe Ferrero of Rivara of Italy and August Dal Porto of Shendandoah Valley, and nephew Arnold "Zeke" Rose. John grew up on the Ferrero Ranch where he lived all of his life tending to the vineyards, walnut orchards and at one time he raised sheep. He was known throughout the Valley as one of the last vineyard "Dry Farmers", believing dry farming produced a high quality grape, which was important to him. A graduate of Sutter Creek High School in 1935, John excelled in football and baseball. In 1933, Sutter Creek High School won the Northern Califoria Small School Football title, and John was an outstanding player. Sutter Creek defeated Vacaville for the title. John was one of the only two surviving members of that team. He enlisted in the navy on 11/9/1942 and was honorably discharged 10/25/1945. He saw active military duties in the Pacific Campaign as a Seabee, performing duties in the Solomon Islands, Marshall Islands and Tinian where he worked on the airstrip from which the U.S. Aircraft Enola flew to drop A-Bombs on Japan. He worked for PG&E for a short time following his Navy discharge. When his father, Pete Ferrero, had a series of strokes, John began a full-time farming career in 1950. He was a Mason at the Drytown Lodge for 75 years, serving in a variety of offices. He was active in the Amador County Grape Growers' Association; the Blue Diamond Association; the American Legion Post #108, and the Amador County Farm Bureau Association. John never married and is survived by nephew Richard Rose (Trudy), niece Lynn Silva, great nephews Michael Rose (Rose Staton), Mark Rose, Nick Silva, Scott Rose, and Brent Rose (Patty); great-great nieces: Kylie Rose, Megan Rose, Michaela Rose and Juliana Rose. Cousins Dena D'Agostini (Dal Porto), Frank Dal Porto, Jr., Tom and Bill Dillian, Marguerite Brown, Doris Bertolotti (Vaira), and Hazel Clay, his long time companion. A viewing will be held on Thursday, July 9th at Daneri Mortuary in Jackson from 3- 5 p.m. for family and 5-8 p.m. for the public. Services will be held Friday, July 10th at Daneri Mortuary at 11:00 a.m. Following these services, burial will be at the Catholic Cemetery in Plymouth. A Celebration of Life will be held at the American Legion Hall in Sutter Hill following the burial. Donations may be presented to Hospice of Amador and Calaveras; 1500 S.
