Edra Pauline Newsom
June 25th, 1909 - July 30th, 2012
Edra Pauline (Roady) Newsom went to be with the Lord July 30, 2012. Private Graveside Services will be held at Sunset View Cemetery in Jackson, CA, followed by a celebration of her 103 years of life to be held Saturday, August 4, at 12:00 noon, at Murieta Village Clubhouse at 14751 Poncho Conde Circle, Rancho Murieta. Pauline was born June 25, 1909 in Brady, Oklahoma. Pauline was the 5th child of Nathaniel Roady and Josie Ellen (Jolley) Roady. When her father died five months later, her mother was left a widow with five children. During this same time period, in the town of Petersburg, TX, Leroy Carlton, a man with seven children had become a widower. In 1911 Josie Roady and "Papa Carlton" were married, creating a blended family of twelve. This family grew to a total of eighteen in the following years and the "Roady-Carlton" family was complete. After several years of living in Lamb County, TX, Pauline's family moved to Lamesa, TX, leaving her to live with a married sister so she could graduate from Olton High School. After graduation Pauline joined her family in Lamesa, where she met Donald Newsom; they were married in October of 1929. During the Dust Bowl, in 1932, Don and Pauline migrated to Corcoran, CA along with their 18- month-old daughter, and Don's mother, father and brother. Don passed away in 1998 after 69 years of marriage. With a family the size of hers, memories and stories abounded but one of Pauline's favorites was that of being baptized at the age of 12, along with her mother and sisters Kate and Julia, in the "tank" on Mullen's Ranch. Don and Pauline remained active in the Baptist Church their entire lives and were Charter Members of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Corcoran, CA. Don and Pauline's legacy includes 1 daughter and 4 sons: Edra Pauline (Polly) married to Wayne Clift (deceased), Rancho Murieta, CA; Dick Newsom and wife Carlos, Klamath Falls, OR; Joel Newsom and wife Cindy, St. Marie's, ID; Dell Newsom and wife Phyllis, Stayton, OR; and Jon Newsom and wife Brenda, Newcastle, CA. They were blessed with 14 grandchildren: Karen/Darrell Unruh, Miles/Linda Clift, Lori/Rikard Forsberg, Donnelle/Winston Russell, Diana/Karl Engstrom; Brian/Pattie Newsom; David Newsom; Janalea/Chris Gades; Kristen Siller; Petra/Adam Bergman; Tracy/Jim Floyd; Tami/Mitch Nichols; Jeni/Eric Kurowski and Jon Paul Newsom; 23 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. With 17 siblings, Pauline's life was also blessed with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to: Hospice of Amador County, 1500 S. Hwy 49, #205, Jackson, CA 95642.
