Betty A. Jamieson
January 18th, 2012
Betty Jamieson died on January 18, 2012 following a lengthy illness. She was 89 years old. Betty was born March 8, 1922 in Paterson, New Jersey to Elizabeth Pahland and William Alexander. She grew up in Paterson, and then attended Elmira College in the Arnot-Ogden Hospital School of Nursing, receiving her B. S. in Nursing Science in 1943. She joined the U. S. Navy Nurse Corps and saw service at various naval installations on the east coast. Betty married her long-time great and good friend, Roger Jamieson, in 1945. They became the parents of Lynn (Stephen), David (Joan), Jay (Kelly) and Douglas (Connie). She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Roger in June of 2007. Betty and Roger moved to California in 1965, settling in the Santa Ynez Valley. Betty became nursing director of the Santa Ynez Valley Hospital, a position she held for 12 years. She then became a supervisor for the Visiting Nurse Service of Northern Santa Barbara County, retiring in 1989. Over the years Betty was active in many of the health issues involving Santa Barbara County. She served on the board of directors of the Visiting Nurse Service of Northern Santa Barbara County and later served on the Santa Ynez Valley Hospital board of directors during the period when it was taken over (in friendly fashion) by Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. She also served for many years on the Friendship house board of directors. She was a founding member of Hospice of the Santa Ynez Valley along with Fr. Charles Stacy and the late Nell de Keidjer. The hospice functioned for eight years until new Medicare regulations precluded the need for an all- volunteer hospice. Additionally, she was named business woman of the year in 1975 and was a long time member of the Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital auxiliary. Later in life Betty joined the Santa Ynez Valley Women Hikers and enjoyed many years of hiking with this upbeat group. Betty was recently honored in recognition ceremonies conducted by the Rotary Club for her service in World War II as a Navy nurse. Private inurnment services will be held at St. Marks Columbarium on February 4, 2012 followed by a memorial service at 10:30 AM for family and friends at the Santa Ynez Valley Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, Betty requests that contributions be made to Atterdag Village of Solvang or Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital.
