Jerome G. Smith passed away Sunday, February 20, 2011 at his home in Ione at the age of 75 years. He was born August 10, 1935 to Jerome and Florence (Lanier) Spradling in Lampasas, Texas. Jerome was a veteran serving in the U. S. Marine Corps during the Korean War reaching the rank of sergeant. He started his career in law enforcement in 1957 working with Border Patrol until 1960. Jerome worked with the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety until 1965 when he transferred to the Department of Justice. Jerome was special agent in charge of the San Francisco Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement and Bureau of Investigations until retiring in 1991. He stayed active in retirement with many civic organizations. Jerome was a member of the Elks Club, VFW, American Legion, and board member of the Ione Memorial District. He was a golfer, enjoyed traveling, and was a strong and loving father to his four sons. He is survived by his sons, Jerome G. Smith, Jr. (Sheila) of Hollister, CA, Jon C. Smith of British Columbia, Canada, Michael J. Smith of Ione, Ca David W. Smith of Ione, CA, grandchildren; Tyler J. Smith, Cole Smith, Vance Smith, James Smith, and Jessica Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Smith on April 21, 2005. Brothers, Joe Spradling (Linda) and John Spradling (Kathy) both of TX, sister, Cindy Robertson (Gale) of TX; A celebration of life will be held Sunday, March 13 at approximatley 12:00 P.M. at Ione Memorial Hall. Lots of laughs, a few tears, and a lot of stories. If you have a story or something you would like to share you will get your chance. Please RSVP Mike Smith on facebook.
