Mary passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2010 in her daughter's home in Herold, CA. She was born July 11, 1911 to William Bert Lewis and Julia Alice Williams Lewis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Hudson Allen, after 68 years of marriage. She is survived by her children, Bert Lewis Allen of Portola Valley, Hugh Ormiston Allen of Wilton and Susan Esther Allen Turpen of Herald; 14 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. During World War II her husband was given the top secret contract to build the Marine base at Camp Pendleton in March 1942. In September 1942 with the war going badly her husband joined the Navy as the first exec officer of the newly formed Seabees and left for the Pacific theater. She was pregnant at that time and until the end of the war she had to raise their three children alone. She was born before women had the right to vote. Her grandmother, Ella Clark, was a Women's Suffragette. In her younger years she was the first female chairman of the Sacramento County School Board and was the published author of "Education or Indoctrination." She was also an Administrative Assistant to Senators Donnelly and Dilworth in Sacramento and Congressman Schmitz in Washington, D.C. Friends are invited to attend a visitation, Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 5:00 PM with a Rosary at 6:00 PM and Funeral Mass following at Daneri Mortuary Chapel in Jackson, CA. Interment will be at Millville Cemetery on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 11:00 AM in Millville, CA.
