Walter Lewis Patterson, Jr., a revered veteran, devoted family man, and an extraordinarily gifted designer, has passed away at the age of 77. Born on January 24, 1947, in El Paso, Texas, to Walter and Arlene Patterson, Walter embarked on a life defined by dedication, creativity, and love. His passing on April 25, 2024, in Meridian, Idaho, marks the end of an era for those who knew and loved him.

Walter's early life in Texas laid the foundation for a journey that would see him respond to his country's call during the Vietnam Conflict. Serving in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968, Walter displayed the courage and resilience that would characterize his entire life. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career that spanned several industries, including a pivotal role at Boeing in the mockup division, as a technical illustrator at Heath Tecna, and as a marine designer for Uniflite Motor Yachts. His achievements in his professional life were paralleled by the creativity and ingenuity he showed in his personal projects. From winning National Fisher body car design awards as a teenager to designing and building an electric car in the 1990s before it became a mainstream endeavor, Walter's talent was undeniable. His work, marked by innovation and precision, leaves a lasting legacy in the design world. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Walter's greatest joy and pride were his family.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Virginia Westmoreland Patterson; his daughter, Jalene King; and his son, Cole Patterson. His legacy also continues through his three grandsons, one granddaughter, and one great-grandson. Walter's life was touched by loss, including the passing of his son Mathew Patterson, his parents, and his sister, Myra Schouten. However, the strength and love of his surviving family reflect the depth of his influence as a husband, father, and grandfather. Walter was known for his humble nature, intelligence, loving demeanor, and immense creativity. His interests were vast, encompassing automotive, boat, and airplane design and engineering. He was never too busy to share his knowledge with nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and extended family, always finding time for long, late-night talks. His unwavering commitment to his family and his capacity to love were his most defining traits.

A funeral service will be held in his honor at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery on Monday, May 13th, 2024, at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Idaho Veteran's Home, continuing Walter's legacy of service and compassion. Walter Lewis Patterson, Jr.'s extraordinary life will be remembered as one of profound impact, marked by remarkable achievements, dedication to his family, and unwavering service to his country. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
