John T McDermott

John T McDermott February 27, 1945 - July 22, 2014 Resident of Pleasant Hill John McDermott of Pleasant Hill passed away peacefully on July 22 surrounded by loving family and friends. John was born in Orange, NJ 2/27/45 to George and Helen McDermott. He grew up in Irvington and attended Archbishop Walsh High school and Merrimac College where he played basketball and received a degree in electrical engineering. During the Vietnam War he worked for the Department of Defense at the Boston Shipyard and was transferred to Mare Island in 1970. John took to California and vice versa. There began a 45 year period of fun and adventure that continued until his passing. John worked at Mare Island for 28 years until he was forced to retire in 1995 to undergo a bone marrow transplant. He recovered and for the past 20 years has been enjoying retirement doing the things he loves best: golfing, fishing for salmon on the ocean and betting on the horses at the local tracks. John is survived by his wife of 40 years, Cheryl, his brother Alan and partner Joyce of Bettendorf, Iowa, His nephew and niece Dr. Dan McDermott and Dr. Laura Catena, their beloved children Luca, Dante and Nicola, by his niece Kymm Brown, her husband Erik, their children Mackenzie and Connor. He is also survived by his cousin Mary Packer of Boca Raton, FL. In addition to family John enjoyed an array of friendships from his grammar school days to his golfing, fishing, and track buddies not to mention his numerous girlfriends with the approval of his wife. He was a wonderful man, generous, kind, full of life and fun and practical jokes. Did I mention as an Irishman he liked a bit of drink. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him and we ask you raise a toast to this Irishman going home.
