Mary Florence (Mathis) Pilgrim, a baptized child of God. Went to live with Jesus on May 4, 2024 with her family by her side. Mary was born to Clayton Farmer Mathis and Eleanor Emile (Clardy) Mathis. On December 6, 1939 in Quitman, Mississippi. Mary was raised in Quitman and graduated from Quitman High School in 1959. She met the love of her life, John Eligiah Pilgrim Jr. in 1958, while roller skating. They married August 7, 1960 at First United Methodist Church in Quitman.

Mary got her life dream of traveling. John’s biggest desire growing up in Mississippi was to get north to the real mountains. So, May 1962, John, with Mary and new baby daughter by his side headed north to Wyoming. They moved back and forth from Mississippi, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana.

Mary remained a stay at home Mom until the kids were in High School and Jr. High. Then she worked to have something to do, but was mostly home by the time the kids got home from school. After the kids were grown and got on with their lives. Mary and John became a team managing apartment complexes around southern Idaho, until their retirement.

They retired in Glenns Ferry, Idaho until John’s passing March 2012. Mary moved to Mountain Home to be closer to her kids and grandkids.

Mary is known for her love of her family, her giving and sharing heart, her many crocheted creations, and her famous buttermilk biscuits.

Mary is survived by her children: Norma Jean and husband Felix Haro of Ontario, OR; Vickie and her husband Dave Butterfield of Mountain Home; Joe Pilgrim of Mountain Home; Julie Pilgrim of Mountain Home. Daughter-in-law Kari Pilgrim of Utah. Sister JoAnn Todd of Alabama.  Along with 36 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren with two more on the way this year. She is preceded in death by both her parents, husband John Eligiah Pilgrim, Jr, her brother Horace Clayton Mathis, her son Kenneth David Pilgrim, and two great-grandchildren.

We, her family, praise the Lord for the past 84 years. She will be greatly missed. We also know that one day, we will see her again and get another one of her great hugs in Heaven.

A special thank you goes to Joe and Julie for their constant companionship and care of mom since Dad’s passing. God’s blessings to you both.

We Entrusted Mary Pilgrim's Care To

Rost Funeral Home

As the only funeral home in Elmore County, the staff at Rost Funeral Home work hard to be active members of the Mountain Home community and to be there to take care of families in every way possible when the need arises. Our funeral home opened in 2005 when Jerry and Janette Rost purchased the business. We’ve continued to grow along with Mountain Home. Jerry’s career began more than fifty years ago in Boise, and along the way, he acquired an 1897 horse-drawn funeral carriage, which we proudly display in our facility....
