Donald G Bennett

Donald G Bennett, 91, long-time resident of Rio Rancho, formerly of Tucson, Arizona, passed away September 20, 2019 Don was born in Wink, Texas, May 6, 1928, to father Thurman I. and mother Ruth Bennett. His wife, Juanita Bennett, preceded him in death in 2014. He is survived by his only surviving son Donald G Bennett Jr. of Albuquerque, daughter Michelle Bennett Lee of Tucson Arizona and Don Jr.'s wife Gayle Lewis Bennett; 14 grandchildren, 2 great children as well as 4 step-grandchildren and 6 step-grandchildren whom he equally loved. Don Bennett (Sr) had an illustrious career beginning with the 82nd Airborne Division, from 1944-49, and upon leaving the army in 1949, he went on to receive his BS, MS. He worked at the Washington Post: Editor of the Tulsa paper; was Editor for the European edition of the Stars & Stripes (Germany); covered the Berlin Wall story for UPI; was a representative to the Presidential journalist conference, and retired Editor of the Tucson Daily Star, to name a few highlights. Don lived with his son Don Jr. and daughter-in-law Gayle from 2014-2019 in Westside Albuquerque. He was a lover of history, particularly of the Civil War and WWII, old movies as well as Hallmark "feel-good" movies. He read every day until his entrance into the Heart Hospital of Albuquerque, then Hospice care at The Retreat in Rio Rancho, where he passed away peacefully. He had trusted in Jesus Christ alone for his salvation and lives now in the presence of his Savior. Don was a faithful member at First Baptist Church of Rio Rancho where he was memorialized October 12th with many church members attending.
