In Loving Memory of Maria S Herrera 1/21/1928 – 3/13/2020 Maria Gertrudes Herrera went to be with our Lord on March 13, 2020, at the age of 92. She was born to Cipriano and Felecita (Gonzales) Sanchez on January 21, 1928 in Penasco Blanco, New Mexico. She was married to Andres Lucero and then later to Willie B Herrera. She was proceeded in death by her parents, stepmother Guadalupe Saiz-Sanchez, husbands Andres and Willie, son Christian, step-children Placido Lucero and Lugarda Martinez, beloved grandsons Leroy Lucero and Dino Maes, daughter-in-law Rosa, sons-in-law Michael Maestas and Manuel Martinez, sisters Clara Gomez, Maria Padilla, and Alice Maes; brothers Thomas, Luis, Fred, Leroy and Manuel Sanchez, sisters-in-law Antonia Herrera and Marcia Lovato and brothers-in-law Patrocinio Gomez, Joe Padilla, Pat Sandoval, Andy Lovato and Nash Leger and a special niece Josie Mascarenas. She is survived by 10 children: Phyllis (Leroy) Greenwald of Loveland, Colorado, Robert (Mary) Lucero of Austin, Texas, Toby (Esther) Gonzales of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Sophia Andrade, Carlos (Lou) Lucero, Eliseo (Shelia), Loretta (Eddie Ortega), Ignacia, Jesusita, and Henry (Patricia) Herrera all of Las Vegas, New Mexico; brother Antonio (Joann) Sanchez of Rio Rancho, New Mexico and sisters Lena Sanchez of Evans, Colorado, Jenny Sandoval of Anton Chico, New Mexico and Teresita (Benerito) Gallegos of Las Vegas, New Mexico; 33 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, special nieces Anna Herrera and Georgia Garcia, daughter-in-law Katherine, sisters-in-law Elsie, Wyn, Dora, and Rose Sanchez and Anita Leger, brother-in-law George Maes and several foster children including Floyd Gutierrez, Maria was a beloved daughter, step-daughter, sister, wife, mother, step-mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She loved to cook and sew making tortillas from scratch and sewing blankets and quilts for family and friends. She lived a long and happy life entertaining and feeding anyone that came to visit. After raising her family, she worked as a nanny for three families, babysat for some of her grandchildren, volunteered as a Foster Grandparent, and finally retiring to her home sweet home which was adorned with pictures of her loving family. She was a devoted Christian and loved to attend services at Cornerstone Church and fellowship with her church family. Arrangements are under the direction of Riverside Funeral Home of Santa Fe. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial/Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date at Cornerstone Church in Las Vegas, NM The family of Maria would like to give a special thanks to Ambercare Hospice staff and especially to Corrine, Marrisa and Ben for providing excellent care to our beloved mother during her final days.
