George Lynan Kirkland
August 8th, 1950 - January 31st, 2023
Mr. George L. Kirkland, age 72, a resident of Orlando passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at home. Mr. Kirkland was born August 8, 1950 in Lakeland to Joe Puttman “JP” and Georgia Olive (Johnson) Kirkland. He was a longtime Polk County resident and graduated from Auburndale High School Class of 1968. He continued on to The University of Florida where he earned his Master’s Degree. He retired after 41 years of working for Chevron Corporation, starting as an Engineer and retiring as Vice Chairman. Traveling overseas with Chevron 14 years (6 ½ in Indonesia & 7 ½ in Nigeria) working as a Civil Engineer & General Manager. He was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church in Auburndale. George was also a member of the All American Wildcatters (Independent Oil Companies) and the University of Florida Foundation. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, gardening and spending time with family. He was preceded in death by his parents. George is survived by his loving family, wife of 50 years – Joy Kirkland of Orlando; 2 sons – Jeremy (Veronica) Kirkland of Midlothian, VA. and Ryan Kirkland of Orlando; brother – Joe (Teri) Kirkland of Dawsonville, GA; 3 sisters – Mary (Alan) Walker of Pahrump, NV., Deborah (Steve) Godwin of Andalusia, AL. and Sandra Kirkland (Rory) Hill of Land O’Lakes; 4 grandchildren – George Wesley, Owen Christopher, Caitlyn Sophia & Matthew Brian. A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, February 18th at First Missionary Baptist Church, 406 Main St., Auburndale, visitation will be held before from 10-11 am at the church. Interment will follow at Glen Abbey Memorial Gardens.
