James Wilbur Greene, 94, passed away peacefully June 10, 2011, in Indian Harbour Beach, FL, to join his wife of 70 years, Rosie Lee, who died in August of 2010. He was born in Covert, KS, January 29, 1917, to Rev. W. Carl and Lena Greene, who instilled the importance of education in their son and daughter, Royalyn. He graduated from Kansas University, always a proud Jayhawk. He coached high school sports in Smith Center, KS, after he and Rosie married. Bill was commissioned in the Army Air Corps in 1943 as a weather instructor, and they moved near Randolph Field in Texas until the war's end. Bill was offered a job in the crop hail insurance, so he, Rosie, and their two daughters moved to Iowa. He remained in that business until he retired to Florida in 1984. Bill was always an avid sports fan, having participated in track, football, and basketball in his early years. College football and basketball were his favorites. He was a member of the Brevard Seminole Booster Club, and had season tickets for the Marlins and Nationals spring training games. He enjoyed belonging to the Satellite Beach Lions Club for 25 years and was a member of the Masons for over 50 years. He was a lifetime member of the Military Officers Association of America, Cape Canaveral Chapter. He was a great dad to his daughters, Sue Sorensen and Linda Neal, and "Gramps" to Bill Horak, Karen Ramos, Cindy Large, Bill Charles, and Tom Charles, and great grandpa to sixteen great grandchildren. His memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, July 15th, at Ascension Lutheran Church at 1053 Pinetree Dr., Indian Harbour Beach. Contributions in Bill's memory may be made to the Satellite Beach Lions Club at P. O. Box 372462, Satellite Beach, FL 32937.
