Alan Maloney, 84, died peacefully at home in Clearwater, Florida on Wednesday, July 24th 2012. Alan was born on January 31, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the son of Dr. James E. Maloney and Bertha A. Maloney. A graduate of Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York, in the early 1950's Alan was a lifeguard at Rockaway Beach, New York and in Miami. Subsequently Alan served as a combat medic in the Korean War and following that was an educator in Florida where he met Arlene Mellenthin a fellow educator. Beginning in 1960, (near the height of the cold war tensions - in the era of the separation of East Germany from West Germany), Alan and his wife Arlene moved to Germany to work for the US Department of Defense School system as educators. In the West German state of Bavaria, Alan served the US Department of Defense School system as an educator and an administrator of many schools including Nuremburg American High School. in his time in Germany, Alan and his family enjoyed travel, fishing, hunting and many hundreds of 10, 12, 20 and even 50 kilometer volksmarches. {Volksmarches (http://www.ivv-web.org/) are organized public walks through small towns, forests, and open natural valleys, fields and other areas.} Alan was a devoted member of many organizations including The Light of the Three Stars Masonic Lodge No. 963 (http://www.963.acgl.us/), and VFW EU Post 10708 (http://www.vfwwebcom.org/eu/post10708). Shortly after the German reunification (Deutsche Wiedervereinigung) in 1990, Alan and Arlene returned to Florida where Alan continued to be an educator teaching many children and adults to swim, and also working as a life guard and water safety instructor. Alan actively competed in the Florida senior games and in many local marathons and triathlons. Alan also founded the Florida Maverick Masters (FMM) swim team, and was an active U.S. Masters swimmer (http://www.usms.org/people/02RE4). In 2000 Alan set a record to became a world champion U.S. Masters swimmer record holder. Alan was very active until late 2001, when a stroke left him unable to continue to teach. In October, 2009 Alan's dear wife Arlene, passed away. Following 2001 and up until Alan's passing he lead a quiet life in his home in Clearwater living near his son and daughter in-law. Alan is survived by his twin brother Andrew Maloney of Hollister, California, his son Sean Maloney (Mary) of Clearwater, Florida, his nephew James E. Ciccolilli of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and numerous other nieces and nephews and his loving cat Mitzy. Alan was a good man with a great respect for life and a great love of life and nature in all it's forms and wonders. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Sierra Club.
