GIBBS, Anna Mae, daughter of the late Willie and Arie Carter, was born September 25, 1929 in Pantego, North Carolina. She was the second born of ten children. She was educated in the school system of Brooklyn, NY. Her formative years under the prayer and leadership of her parents and the late Bishop Frank Edward Cook of Holy Trinity, COGIC brought on strong spiritual guidance that carried her throughout her life. She never wavered from praying and calling on the Lord even in her sickness. Anna was united in Holy Matrimony to George Gibbs (predeceased) on July 19, 1948. She was the mother of 4 children. Anna was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was a seamstress extraordinaire and was a union representative for the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union of New York. Anna also was an Administrative Assistant to Mayor David Dinkins during his term. She then worked for the New York City Department of Social Services. Anna retired from the New York City Transit Authority in 1996. In 2005, Anna decided to move to Wesley Chapel, FL to enjoy her retirement with her companion of 30+ years, W. C. Honeycutt. She loved to travel and made lifelong friends especially in Bermuda, which she considered her second home. Affectionately known as “Anna Mae,” she was sweet-natured, kind-hearted and generous. She loved her family and friends. You could always call on her in your time of need. She enjoyed shopping, going out to dinner and entertaining. March 20, 2017, Anna Mae was admitted into Angels Senior Living and Memory Care. Though her memory was slowly fading she never forgot how to pray. On Monday, March 19, 2018, Anna Mae peacefully entered eternal rest. Rest from labor, from sickness, from pain and suffering. Although she is no longer with us we are reminded that “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” Anna Mae was predeceased by her sons, George Gary and Michael Anthony; brothers, William Howard Carter, Irving Rondell Carter, Vernon Tyrone Carter; brother in-laws, David Jones and Franklin Greene and great granddaughter Ariel Gibbs. She leaves to cherish her memory and rejoice in her home-going: her son, Robert Jesse Gibbs; daughter, Valerie Ann Gibbs; grandchildren, Robert, Lenear, Kisha, Desiree, Deanne, Michael, Edward, Charisse, LaTasha; companion, W. C. Honeycutt; one brother, John Henry Carter; five sisters, Arie Florine Jones, Velma Louise Brockett (Carl), Marion Costella Greene, Carol Levine Best (Cleveland), Sherry Marlene McHenry (Richard); thirteen great grandchildren, nine great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; devoted friends Cecilia Downs, Josephine Gurley, Hazel Swindel and many special friends. A visitation will take place at Loyless Funeral Home on Friday, March 23 from 6:00 ~ 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will take place at Roy Gilmore Funeral Home on Monday, March 26 at 11:00 a.m. Family will receive friends one hour prior. Internment to follow at St. Michael's Cemetery in East Elmhurst. Note from the family: If ordering flowers for the service in New York, please contact a local florist in Jamaica, NY.
