David John Barr
January 22nd, 1938 - May 1st, 2013
Barr, David John, 75, of St. Petersburg, died Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at St. Pete General Hospital. Born in Stubenville, OH, he came here in November, 1961 from Cincinnati, OH. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy. While studying pharmacy, he met the love of his life at church and married Sylvia Ann Gerdon on September 23, 1961. They honeymooned in FL so he could take his pharmacy board exams. After passing his boards, he began working for Doc Webb at Webb's City. He later owned and operated Skyview Drugs, Inc. in Pinellas Park for more than 25 years during which time he served as the consulting pharmacist for the Masonic Home of Florida. He was a Past Master and member of Nitram Lodge #188 and a member of the Knights Templar. A member of Palm Lake Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for more than 47 years, he served as an elder and past board chair, among other leadership positions. He served the Christian Church (DOC) as a member and chairman of the Commission on Ministry for the Florida Region for more than 35 years and past member of the General Board and Administrative Comm. for the Christian Church (DOC) US and Canada. He was president of Suncoast Christian Housing owners of Burlington Tower. He was a member and past president of the Pinellas County Pharmaceutical Society, Florida Pharmacy Assoc., American Pharmacists Assoc. and National Assoc. of Retail Pharmacists. He was a former member of the BPO ELKS, Lodge # 1224. He earned his private pilot's license in 1976 and was a member of AOPA. He was a member of the Cincinnati Bearcat Alumni Assoc. He was preceded in death by his parents David and Hannah Barr, brother William Lindsay Barr and sister Hannah Frances Ablang. He is survived by his loving wife, attorney Sylvia A. Barr, daughter Darlene L. Kelly (Charles), sons David John II (Jennifer) and James Andrew (Kelli), and eight grandchildren Megan and Charles Kelly, Jeffrey (Jennifer), Zachary, Ellen, and Phillip Barr and Danielle and Jamie Barr. He was a proud and loving grandfather and he will be sorely missed by his adoring wife, children, grandchildren, extended family members, and friends. He retired as a retail pharmacist of more than 50 years most recently with Eckerd Drug Co. and CVS. A visitation will be held from 2:30pm - 4:30pm and 6:30pm - 8:30pm with a Masonic Service at 7pm on Saturday, May 4th at Anderson McQueen, 7820 38th Ave. N., St. Petersburg. A funeral service will be at 3:30pm on Sunday, May 5th at Palm Lake Christian Church, 5401 22nd Ave. N., St. Petersburg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Palm Lake Christian Church and the Hillsborough County Bar Foundation, Inc.
