Joe Paxton Barnett, 90, found peace on October 20th at Suncoast Hospice in St. Petersburg. Joe was born in Kentucky but grew up in Brooksville, Florida. He attended the University of Arkansas and then the University of Florida where he graduated with a degree in Horticulture. He was a B-17 pilot in WWII stationed stateside. After the war he worked in Ft. Pierce before moving in 1957 to Temple Terrace where he was sales manager at Stauffer Chemical Company. In 1968 he moved to Belle Glade to become VP and later President of Consolidated Chemical Company. In 1979 he retired briefly to Homosassa only to be lured back to work with his former U of F roommate doing what he loved, the fertilizer and chemical business helping citrus growers in Wauchula, FL. There he bought a citrus grove and worked with Florida Fertilizer Company until 1988 when he bought a house in Boone, NC and then retired to the mountains in 1989. In 2005 he moved to St. Pete to live in an independent retirement center and spend more time with his granddaughter. Joe leaves a son J. Paxton Barnett (Janice), a daughter Karen V.Barnett (Lori) and a granddaughter Caroline. Joe loved Gator football, to play golf, go fishing or best of all riding through the woods at hunting camp just watching all the wonders of nature. He always looked for new roads to drive just to see where they would take him. He will now take his final drive to the Brooksville cemetery where he will rest with family. Joe's family would like to express their gratitude for the compassionate care that he received while in the care of Suncoast Hospice at Bayfront. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the University of Florida Foundation, 700 Experiment Station Road, Lake Alfred, FL 33850.
