John H. Hansen

Hansen, John H., 88, of St. Petersburg, Florida, died Tuesday, August 6, 2002. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, he moved here earlier this year from Stuart, Florida. He was raised in Manasquan, New Jersey, where his father owned a boatyard and was instrumental in developing Brielle and Manasquan?s boating and fishing industry. He was an all around athlete at Manasquan High School graduating in 1932. He graduated from Newark College of Engineering with a Bachelor?s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation he was employed as an engineer by U.S. Steel in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. During World War II he was a part of many critical engineering programs including raising the battleships from Pearl Harbor. He was assigned by U. S. Steel to Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania, where he was one of the senior engineers detailed to open the new plant. He retired in 1967 and returned to live and fish in Manasquan and later Stuart, Florida. He worshiped at the Methodist Church and was a member of the Elks, Masons, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was named Sportsman of the Year in Manasquan and remained an avid boater and fisherman until very recently. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Genevieve Gibson-Hansen and their daughter Marjorie Hansen and her husband, Thomas Hayes all of St. Petersburg.
