Jane Gray Knowles Warner, 77, died October 14, 2002, from cancer at the Bayfront Medical Center. She was born February 21, 1925 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma of the late Robert Treat Knowles and Jane Whitney Gray Knowles. She was a graduate of the Louisville Collegiate School, Louisville, KY and the Ward-Belmont Junior College, Nashville, TN. She attended the Garland School, now part of Simmons College. She was a talented painter and sculptor, and designed and costumed many church pageants at Christmas and Easter. She was a member of the Stuart Society, the National Society of Colonial Dames in Kentucky, the St. Petersburg Sail and Power Squadron, and was past President of the Art Center. She was involved in CASA, Meals on Wheels, and The Cold Weather Shelter. Mrs. Warner has been a summer resident of Harpswell, Maine for the past 16 years and attended the Elijah Kellogg Church. She was also a member of the Auburn Colony, the Merriconeague Yachting Association, the Potts Point Road Association, The Mid-Coast Hospital Auxiliary and the Northeast Croquet Club and was a familiar site playing croquet and instructing her friends opposite Estes Lobster House. She started a Habitat for Humanity group at the Kellogg Church and publicized the efforts of Habitat by taking and displaying photographs of work in progress. Mrs. Warner had a great interest in the environment and was instrumental in establishing the Knowles Pond Conservation Area, Northfield, NH adjacent to her ancestral home. She also planted trees wherever she went including a strip of 24 oaks on 23rd Avenue North between 2nd street and 4th street. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, M. Burrage Warner, two sons, Seth of Charlottsville, VA and Fletcher of St. Petersburg, daughters Alice of Indianapolis, IN, and Ashley of Seattle, WA., and six grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Whitney K. Hardy, Louisville, KY. One grandson and twin daughters predeceased her. A service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Saturday, October 19, 2002. The service will be at 10 o?clock. Family will receive friends in the Church Library after the service. Her remains will be interred in the family cemetery at her ancestral farm in Northfield, NH.
