David Alan Piper
August 18th, 1953 - February 26th, 2015
Piper, David Alan, 61, of St. Petersburg, died Thursday, February 26, 2015, at Bay Pines VA Health Care System. A lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, David was born in Des Moines, Iowa while his father was attending seminary school. He graduated from St. Petersburg High School, Class of 1972. He was a Army veteran during the Vietnam era and served most of his time in Germany. He was a member of Open Bible Church in St. Petersburg. David was an avid Go-Kart racer. He was a volunteer for Sun 'n Fun for 25 years in Lakeland, FL where he served as Chairman of the Light Plane area and oversaw 150 volunteers each year. Dave was dedicated to assuring that this area was safe for guests, volunteers, and light aircraft of all types. Through Dave's leadership & tireless commitment, this area of Sun 'n Fun is thriving today. He even built his own aircraft in years past. David donated his time every year as Santa Claus for underprivileged children. David also enjoyed fishing.. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth C. Piper, and his grandparents, Charles H. and Frances Piper. He is survived by his mother, Patricia L. Piper of St. Petersburg; daughters, Cristy M. (Fred) Assidy and Somer (Dallas) Paden, both of St. Petersburg; his brothers, Donald R. Piper of Mounds, OK, Daniel C. Piper of Summerville, SC, Duane K. Piper of Cumming, GA, and Douglas P. Piper of Greencastle, IN; his sister, Denelle P. Sheridon of St. Petersburg; five grandchildren; four nieces and six nephews. Donations may be made in his name to Sun 'n Fun Fly-in, Inc. or Florida Air Museum.
