Messner, Samuel T. Jr., 87, of Atlanta and formerly of St. Petersburg, died Thursday Nov. 6, 2003 in Atlanta, GA. Born in Binghamton, NY in 1916 and moved to St. Petersburg, FL at the age of six. Mr. Messner was an avid golfer in his younger years, capturing the St. Petersburg city championship in 1937, and representing Lakewood Country Club in the US Amateur Championships later that year. After attending SPJC for two years, he graduated from the University of PA, Wharton School of Finance, and served as a Captain in the Army Air Force during WWII. After owning and operating a chain of launderettes and dry cleaning outlets in the 1950?s, he became a stockbroker with various firms until his retirement from Raymond, James and Assoc. in 1981. He was a member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, the Suncoasters, Nitram Masonic Lodge, and Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth. He is survived by a son, Richard Messner; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Messner; two sisters: Sarah Collins and Betty Lorenzo; and grandson, Soren Messner-Zidell.
