Ormston, III, Alfred Joseph, 86, of St. Petersburg died Sunday Feb. 15, 2004 at home under the care of hospice. Born in Scranton, PA, he moved to St. Petersburg as a young boy in 1921 and was thereafter a life long resident. He attended Central Primary School, Boys Jr. High and was a 1934 graduate of St. Petersburg High School. Following high school, he graduated from St. Petersburg Junior College where he was a varsity swimmer. He then entered the University of Florida and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1939. Upon graduation, he returned to St. Petersburg where he began a life-long career with Florida Power Corporation. Mr. Ormston interrupted that career to serve as a United States Naval Officer in WWII. He saw 4 years of action in the LCI?s. He separated from service in 1946 as a Lieutenant Commander and returned to St. Petersburg to resume his engineering career. His affiliation with the Naval Reserve continued until 1952. Mr. Ormston retired from Florida Power as Vice President of Engineering and Construction in 1982. An active community volunteer, he was a past Board member of the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, Suncoaster?s, Dragon Club, Racquet Club, St. Pete Yacht Club, Port Commission and Chairman at St. Anthony?s Hospital. He served as a Fellow of the Florida Engineering Society and past President of the local chapter. He was Chairman of the Prime Movers Committee of the Edison Electric Institute. He was also active with Kairos Prison Ministry, Catholic Social Services and St. Paul?s Catholic Church, where he was a lector and Eucharistic minister for many years. Survivors include his wife of 55years, Mary Murphy Ormston; two 2 daughters: Mary Lynn Coppins ? St. Petersburg and Jean Messick ? Mooresville, NC, two 2 granddaughters and one 1 grandson.
