James Herbert Fowler
October 29th, 1933 - October 4th, 2004
James Herbert Fowler, COL USA Ret, 70 years of age, died on Monday, October 4, 2004. Jim was born in Westminster MD on Oct 29, 1933, and raised in Baltimore. After graduation from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, he earned a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was one of the first four students enrolled in a new cooperative program with the Baltimore and Ohio B&O Railroad. Also a member of the U.S. Army ROTC program, Jim was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army upon his graduation. During his 30-year career with the Army, COL Fowler was assigned to numerous positions across the United States, Europe and the Middle East, and completed two tours of duty in Vietnam. His decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, for performing his duties with distinction while assigned to Central Command, MacDill AFB. Throughout his career, he was also recognized with the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star two Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal five Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Air Medal two Oak Leaf Clusters. After his retirement in 1988, Jim became a member of the St. Petersburg Sail and Power Squadron, where he served on numerous committees and taught courses in Sailing and Public Boating Safety. He was also a member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, the Military Officers Association of America and the St. Petersburg Retired Officers Club. Jim was also active in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance VITA program, serving as a site coordinator. Jim is survived by his wife Wilma; his daughter Leslie Diane Fowler Dellas, her husband Thomas and their sons Christopher and Andrew; his daughter Julie Ann Fowler Gillespie, her husband Jeffery and their children Jessica, Jennifer, and James; his son Edward Herbert Fowler, his wife Nancy and their children, Lindsey, Edward, Greg, and Kimberly; and his son James Taylor Fowler, his wife Pamela and their sons Taylor, Michael and Stephen. Other survivors include Jim?s brothers Noah Cocoa FL, Charles Westminster MD and Raymond Littlestown PA, and ten nephews and four nieces. Jim was proceeded in death by his sisters Dorothy, June and Rosalie. Jim has been an active member of Grace Lutheran Church since 1981. Funeral Services will be held there 4301 16th St. N, St. Petersburg at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct 7, with a reception following. Internment with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Moffitt Cancer Center, Grace Lutheran Church, or the St. Petersburg Sail and Power Squadron.
