A. Halsey Ford
April 15th, 1923 - September 23rd, 2006
Ford, A. Halsey, 83, of St. Petersburg, died Saturday September 23, 2006 in St. Petersburg after a short illness. He arrived in St. Petersburg in 1925 from his native Salem, Massachusetts, with his parents, Halsey and Ruth Ford and one brother, Tenney. After graduating from St. Pete High School in 1941, he attended Parks Air College in St. Louis and served as Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt during WWII. After attending SPJC and the University of Florida, he married Lucille Fleet and had a daughter Mary of Denver, CO and Harvey of St. Petersburg. His grandchildren are Anne Elmquist and Katie Williams of Denver and Meggie Ford and Drew Ford of St. Petersburg and one great-grandson, Ford Elmquist of Denver. He retired in 1991 after 28 years in the Engineering Department of the City of St. Petersburg. He was a member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, the St. Petersburg Jaycees, the Dragon Club and the Over the Hill Gang. He was a lifelong fisherman and sailor, particularly in his beloved Fish Class in the 1950?s and 60?s. He explored and raced upon the waters of Tampa Bay and the Gulf from the 1930?s to the 90?s and had a keen interest in Weedon Island, hence the memorial request below. He participated in multitudes of local races, MORC, FORA and SORC, as well as to Mexico and 28 times in the Royal Gaboon. In 1972, he was a member of the sailing team that won the North American Men?s Sailing Championship ? The Mallory Cup. Anderson-McQueen Funeral & Cremation Centers-NE St. Petersburg.
