Roney, Sarah Hancock Eustis ?Sally,? 85, of St. Petersburg, died Monday November 20, 2006 at home. She came here in 1923 from her native Middletown, CT. She was a graduate of North Ward Elementary School, St. Petersburg High School, Walnut Hill Preparatory School in Natick, Massachusetts and received her B.A. in 1943 from Smith College. She was an accomplished swimmer during her high school years. She made the try-outs for the 1936 Olympics in Astoria, Long Island and held many state swimming records in the 1950?s. She was a Lieutenant in the U. S. Navy from 1943 until 1946 and served as a code breaker, helping to break the Japanese code. She was an Executive Secretary for Austin Motor Company in New York City, NY from 1948 until 1950 and a Social Case Worker for the City of St. Petersburg from 1950 until 1951. She served on the Board of Directors for the Child Guidance Clinic and the Community Welfare Council and attended First Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul H. Roney, Senior Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Markwick Roney, Indian Rocks Beach, FL; two sons: Paul Hitch Roney, Jr., and Timothy Eustis Roney Sandy and all of St. Petersburg; a sister-in-law, Peggy Merchant, Western Springs, IL; seven grandchildren: Jason Mathew Smith Lori, Lisa Marie Roney, Sarah Teresa Hancock Roney, John Paul Hitch Roney, Sean Timothy Roney, Lane Sullivan Hitch Roney, and Caitlin Jean Roney deceased; two great-granddaughters: Courtney Michele Taylor and Anna Grace Reed; three nieces: Renata Eustis, Anne Eustis, and Kathryn Eustis; and three nephews: Steve Hensel, Paul Hensel and Donald Hensel.
