John C. McCarthy
March 23rd, 1921 - February 16th, 2007
John C. McCarthy, a highly decorated WW II Veteran, died on February 16, 2007 at Hospice, VA Medical Center, Bay Pines, FL. He was 85. McCarthy, a native of Ponca, Nebraska, was a 37 year resident of St. Petersburg, Florida. He entered the Army in 1942 at Ft. Crook, Nebraska and participated in numerous WW II campaigns with the 7th Armored Division including: the Rhineland, Northern France, Ardennes and Western & Central Europe where he distinguished himself with the American Theater Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon and Silver Campaign Stars. In 1944 John was permanently disabled from combat injuries. In 1944 he joined the Disabled American Veterans as a Service Officer in Nebraska; later followed by a career with the Veterans Administration. After he retired from the VA, he returned to the DAV and managed the St. Petersburg, Florida District Office until his 1980 retirement. John was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. John is survived by his wife of 64+ years, Lucille Oberle McCarthy, St. Petersburg, son John C. McCarthy, Jr., Grandson Geoffrey C. McCarthy and Great Granddaughter Brooke Lynn McCarthy all of Inglis, Fla.
