Robert J. Duffy

Robert J. Duffy, Sr., 93, of St. Petersburg, Florida, died, Thursday, June 25, 2009. Born in New York City, he received undergraduate and graduate degrees at Fordham University. He was employed by National City Bank and Snyder and Black before coming to Florida in 1951. He was a former Police and Fire Commissioner of Redington Beach in the 1950's. He was an appraiser employed by Pinellas County and various mortgage companies. He served in the U.S. Army as a Sgt in WW II serving in Europe with the 302nd Infantry Regiment (94th Div) and was awarded three bronze stars and four battle stars. He was a member of the NRA, VFW, Tampa Bay MENSA, St. Petersburg Board of Realtors, Suncoast Tiger Bay Club, the Elks Club, Moose-Gulf Beach Lodge and was Catholic. He served as a Sheriff's volunteer since 1992, worked in the County jail and in Juvenile fingerprints. He was a member of the Pinellas County GOP Committee since 1952, was active in Republican politics, ran for Redington Beach town commissioner and was elected twice in the 50's but ran with no success for County-wide positions on 3 occasions, once for County Commission 1954 and twice for tax appraiser 1960 and 1964. He was a leader on the Beach and was the main worker for the Beach GOP Club, turning out large GOP numbers in all elections. He set up beach campaign election headquarters for several elections. He retired from the real estate appraisal business in 1988 and developed a mortgage loan business. He is survived by 6 children: Carol Bumiller and Joanne (John) Gilch of Seminole, Florida, William R. of Pinellas Park, Florida, Michael L. (Becky) of St. Petersburg, Florida, David E. (Marjorie) of Kenner, LA and Robert J. (Lynn) of Panama City, Florida; 2 sisters, Dorothy Duffy of New Paltz, New York and Ruth Duffy of Carrollton, Ohio, 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Visitation 4 to service time at 6 PM Monday, June 29, 2009 at E. Dale Gunter Funeral Home 4100-16th Street North. The family requests memorials to: The American Diabetes Association P.O.
