Laurence "Danny" Daniel Childs
December 12th, 1946 - March 6th, 2008
Childs, Laurence Daniel, Jr. Danny passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2008, at St. Anthony's Hospital. Born to an early St. Petersburg family, Judge Laurence D. Childs and Sallie B. Childs, he graduated from Aikin Open Air School. Danny was a brilliant man. In the '70s he invented, designed and built the world's first Air Shifter. He also built a Top Fuel motorcycle that held the world speed record 3 years in a row. That bike is on display at Big Daddy Don Garlits' museum in Ocala, FL. Danny was employed by Racecars of Yesterday. He is survived by his sister, Pattie Kealy, of Vancouver, Canada, and his extended racing family. We will all miss you! See you at the track... Memorial service at Anderson McQueen Funeral Home, 2201 Dr. M.L. King St. N. at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 15th. Reception to follow.
