Brooks, Amanda C. Amanda Brooks died peacefully at 3:35PM June 19th after a short illness. She was 97 years old. Amanda was born on Oct. 23, 1910 in Creal Springs, IL. She was the last surviving member of her original family that included her 2 brothers and 4 sisters. She moved to Gary, IN where she met her husband to be Charles Joseph Brooks. Charles and Amanda were married on Feb. 20, 1936. Charles worked in the United States Steel Plant in Gary, IN for 41 years before retiring in 1965. They moved to St. Petersburg in 1965 and resided at their waterfront home in Coquina Key that they shared with Amanda's sister Sarah Faga and her husband Tommy. Charles Whitey Brooks died in 1990 and was the last surviving member of his family of 7 siblings. Surviving members of Amanda's family include her son William Brooks, a daughter Florence McMannie, and just an enormous number of grandchildren, nephews, and nieces that are simply too numerous to mention. The family is deeply appreciative of the help Amanda received from many of the volunteer organizations from St. Petersburg that assisted her during her later years. A special thanks is reserved for the Meals on Wheels organization that provided Amanda with food for the past several years. Her grandson Roger Brooks also volunteered to stay with her in her home for the past 4 years and was a great help in allowing Amanda to live in her home until the age of 97. A visitation will be held on Monday, June 23, 2008 from 5-7 pm at Anderson McQueen Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 11 am at the same location. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the charity of your choice.
