Smith, Elaine L., 78, of St. Petersburg, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2008 surrounded by her family. She was born July 21, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY where she was raised until entering the convent at age eighteen. Elaine served in the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary order from 1947 to 1965. While in the convent, Elaine graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor's of Nursing degree. After leaving the convent, Elaine met Donald Smith who she married in 1967. Donald and Elaine moved to St. Petersburg in 1971 to raise their two children Christopher and Joanne. While working part-time and raising her children, Elaine earned a Master's degree in Education from the University of South Florida in 1980. She worked at PTEC as a Nursing Instructor and Department Chairperson for twenty years prior to her retirement in 1994. Elaine was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church where she loved to volunteer in the school office to be close to her grandchildren. Elaine's family was the love of her life. She was a beloved wife, mother, and nana and will be forever missed. Elaine touched the lives of countless people throughout her life as a nurse, teacher, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Donald F. Smith, a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Kathy Smith, a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Dan Lynch, three grandchildren, Molly and Christopher Lynch, and Adrian Smith, a sister, MaryAnn, and her precious German Shepherd, Gus. A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 29th from 1-3pm at Anderson McQueen Funeral Home-2201 Dr. Martin Luther King St. N. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00am on Monday, June 30th at Holy Family Catholic Church, 200 78th Ave. NE.
