Robert W. Curtis
June 26th, 1926 - December 26th, 2008
Curtis, Robert W., Sr. 82, of St. Petersburg, passed away at home on Dec. 26th. Son of Howard S. and Helen Abbott Curtis of Palmer, MA. He attended Palmer Schools, graduated from Deerfield Academy and Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH. He served as a member of the Air Force during WWII. He was Owner and President of Curtis Insurance and Realty Corporation of Monson, MA until his retirement in 1991. He was a longtime summer resident of Martha's Vineyard Island, owned and operated the Boston House Restaurant in Oak Bluffs, MA. Served as President of the Monson Rotary Club, during which time he obtained the first ambulance for the town. In addition, he chaired the Cemetery Commission and Zoning Board. He coordinated the Fund Drive for the 1955 Monson Flood Victims with a sister town in Bethlehem, NY. He served as Treasurer of the Heart Association and Muscular Dystrophy Association. He was a Director of both the Monson's Saving Bank and Countryside Bank of Palmer, MA. He retired in 1991 to St. Petersburg. He was an avid tennis player and served as a coach for the intramural tennis teams and was instrumental in the development of the Fitness Center, donated his time as the club Photographer, served on the Board of Directors, was past President and Commodore and until his death served as Chair of the Gem Society of the Isla del Sol Yacht and Country Club. In addition, he was a member of The St. Petersburg Yacht Club. He leaves behind four loving children, R. William Jean Curtis, Jr., Patricia, Cynthia and Susan all of St. Petersburg; 6 grandchildren, Spencer Jessica Curtis, Richard Paula, Nicole Bentley, Sarah, Noah and Tarah. He also leaves 2 great-grandchildren, Carter and Elliott Belle Curtis and many beloved friends. A memorial service will be held at Pass-A-Grille Community Church with Rev. Keith Haemmelmann officiating on Friday, January 2nd at 2pm. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to the Gem Society of Isla del Sol Yacht and Country Club or Pass-A-Grille Community Church.
