Gardner, Douglas S. Sr. 82, of St. Petersburg, passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at St. Anthony's Hospital after a brief illness. A proud native of the North Shore of Long Island, New York, Doug and his wife, Betsy, have been residents of Florida since 1978 and celebrated 56 years of marriage in September. Doug loved his family above all; sailing, vacations in Maine and yard work also brought him great joy. He was preceded in death by his brother, Roger Williams Gardner. He is survived by his wife, Betsy; children, Susan Gardner Bowers Paul, Mollie Gardner Mayhew and her fiancé, Thomas G. Ledford; and Douglas Shipman Gardner, Jr. Wendy Drexler; brother, Richard Carner Gardner Zita; sister-in-law, Nancy Roney and her husband, William Theodore, Jr.; 4 grandchildren; Caitlin Pinnt Aaron, Brice and Alison Mayhew, Alex Drexler; 1 great-grandson, Jacob Pinnt; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be sent to the Young America's Foundation, The Reagan Ranch, Attn: Meredith, 217 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.
