John William Slaughter
July 25th, 1945 - January 25th, 2017
Slaughter, Dr. John William 71 of St. Petersburg passed away January 25th, 2017. John was born July 25, 1945 in Auburn, Alabama and raised in Tuskegee. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Emily; daughters Capote, Cyrile, and Emily; sons, Courtland and Jon; 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. From a young age, John had a passion for science and overcame dyslexia to become a Veterinarian, spending 38 years in the profession. In St. Petersburg, John worked at Noah's Place Animal Hospital from its founding until 2006. He then worked for Ruskin Animal Hospital until his retirement in 2014. In addition to a DVM from Tuskegee Institute, John had a master's degree in Fish Health from Auburn University and worked for many years with Segrest Farms of Gibsonton. When he wasn't working with animals, he was working on antique cars and drove his favorite car on the day he died. He loved animals and people and was never happier than with a challenging case. John was driven to help everyone succeed and all who knew him are better for this. Several people have pursued a DVM at his encouragement and he loved sharing his hard-won knowledge. He always had a story to tell and a smile for everyone. He will be missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held on February 18th at 11:00 am at Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home, 2201 Dr. ML King Street North, St Petersburg. In lieu of flowers, please donate to any animal charity of your choice.
