Eunice L. Comstock

Eunice L Comstock went home to the Lord on February 5, 2005 at the age of 98. She was born December 12, 1906 in Nelson, NE., where her father ran a livery stable. It was there with her sister and three brothers that she grew up and attended school. Eunice married Leo Comstock on June 18, 1927 in Lincoln, NE. Their first son, Wilfred was born March 9, 1928 and Rex joined the family on January 4, 1932. In 1940 the family moved to Kelso, Wash., where Leo was employed by Puget Sound Power and Light and Eunice worked as a housekeeper at the hospital in Longview. Leo was transferred to Olympia in 1944 and in 1950 they moved into a new home on Eskridge Way, built by Leo and the boys. Eunice worked for the Olympia Cannery for many years, then at the cafeteria at the Capitol Rotunda. During the 1960’s she began to provide child care for the children of many families in the area. She finally “retired” in 1990 at the age of 83. Flowers have always been a joy to Eunice and she planted many varieties in her yard, which her neighbors and friends also enjoyed. Family camping was an important part of their lives and Eunice liked to entertain and travel with Leo when he was Vice President of the State Electrical Workers. After his retirement they would spend part of the winter months in Palm Springs. After the death of her husband, Eunice sold the family home, purchased a modular home and lived there until 1997 when she moved to the Firs Retirement Apartments. Since 1999 she had resided at Alterra Clare Bridge. She was a 61 year member of Olympia First Baptist Church. She loved to sing and especially enjoyed the church music. Eunice is survived by her brother Kenneth of Wenatchee, sons; Wilfred of Ephrata, and Rex (Julie) of Lacey. Eight grandchildren; Steve Comstock of Ephrata, Greg Comstock of Bremerton, Jane VanDeventer of Lacey, Debra Champlin of Olympia, Tom Comstock of Cedar City, UT, Phil Comstock of Olympia, Dena Taylor of Champion, NE., and Brad Comstock, presently residing in Newport Pagnell, England. There are 20 great-grandchildren and five great-great, grandchildren. A Memorial service will be held at the Olympia First Baptist Church, 9th and Washington, on Friday, February 11, 2005 at 11:00 am. Pastor Bob Sievers, officiating. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Memorial Fund of the First Baptist Church. From the Comstocks in England February 7th On Saturday, the 5th of February 2005, my Grandmother passed away. Her name was Eunice Comstock, but we just knew her as "Grandma" or "Great Grandma". She was 98 years old and had 8 grandchildren, around 20 great grandchildren, and at least 5 great-great grandchildren. Grandma spent most of her life in Olympia so I was lucky enough to always have her around. I always thought she would live to be over 100. It had been some time since I had seen Grandma, but I remember that she was smiling and laughing when I saw her last and I think that is how I will always remember her. I also have fond memories of how she liked to talk about growing up in Nebraska and the plate of deviled eggs that she would bring for holiday meals. She tried to teach me the card game of "Canasta". I remember the big jar full of marbles that used to sit on her window sill in the kitchen of her house and how she would reassure me when I was scared to go down the stairs into her basement. She wore a pink bathing suit every year when we vacationed at the lake. Grandma seemed to really enjoy when the whole family got together and she really seemed to light up when there were kids around. She kept her teeth in a glass by her bed at night and she liked to drink coffee. I liked the way she would giggle when kids were running around. She always dressed nice. Grandma always had a smile for me no matter what my hairstyle was or what kind of car I was driving. We will miss Grandma, Brad
