Debra Detrick, 62, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Multi-Care Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup on November 24, 2015. She had received a double lung transplant in May of 2014, which gave her a year of good health and time to enjoy family and friends. Unfortunately, her body rejected the new lungs though she and her medical team did everything possible. Debbie was born in Waipahu, Hawaii to Rose and Andrew Carino, Sr. The second of eight children, she and her family relocated to Washington State when Debbie was just four years old. She attended Sumner and Auburn schools, graduating in 1971 from Auburn Senior High School. She also attended Green River Community College. In 2014, Debbie retired from The Boeing Company after 37 years. Last summer Debbie was able to attend a family reunion held in Ka’aawa, Hawaii. She was happy to see dozens of cousins and relatives and also to visit friends on the island of Kauai. She loved road trips, dinner with friends, spending time with her son and taking part in family activities. Her many adventures took her to Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, California, Mexico, Nevada and many special places in Washington state. She is survived by her son Brian Detrick, Federal Way; her sisters Glenda Carino, Tacoma; Lily Ellison, Federal Way; Paula Marchitto, Lake Tapps; Cheryl Carino-Burr, Federal Way; Andrea Carino, Seattle; brothers-in-law Ron Burr and Rick Marchitto; nieces Bree Ellison and Stephanie Carino-Pride; nephews Jesse Burr, Aaron Burr, Justin Carino, Mario Marchitto, Rickey Marchitto and many other cousins and relatives in Hawaii and across the United States. She is preceded in death by her parents, Rose and Andrew Carino, Sr.; her brothers Dexter Carino and Andrew Carino, Jr.; her nephew Drew Ellison and her brother-in-law Leif Ellison. The family would like to thank Debbie’s transplant team at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle; the palliative care doctors and nurses at Multi-Care Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup and her many friends and co-workers who nurtured her and kept her safe over the years. Though Debbie’s new lungs eventually failed, she received one good year of health as a result of an organ donor. In the end, Debbie was able to donate her corneas so that two people would receive the gift of sight. If you would like to do something in memory for Debbie, think about becoming an organ donor. A celebration of Debbie’s life will take place in February, date, time and place to be determined.
